Another Russian Play

We have been learning two more Russian songs: Are you Sleeping and the Peace Song. Each child gets a turn on a Russian instrument. We also acted out a classic Russian Tale called the Enormous Turnip. We acted it out 4 times to give everyone a turn. I read it entirely in Russian as they listened for their cues and character names. We wore real Russian costumes too.

Place Value and money

The students are getting lots of experiences with money and place value. They go hand in hand.

Opening Valentines

Lots of smiles, thank yous and friendship abounded while we opened our valentines! Thank you!

Valentine Math Games

We played Valentine math games all of Thursday morning. We graphed, added, measured, discovered missing addends, etc. Thanks to the moms who came in to help us.

Neighborhood Map

Remember at the 1st grade appointment in August when you wrote your child's name by the street where you live? Well, we did a game using our neighborhood map and our directions North, East, South and West. They are getting better and better at map work.

Valentines!

We made our beautiful Valentine holders on Thursday. They are up on the wall ready for valentines to be delivered on Monday, Tuesday, Wed. or Thurs. Make sure you put your name on your cards as well as the name of your friend (from the list that I sent home on Thurs.) Please don't bring a lot of candy, and if you do bring a piece of candy, remember that it needs to be peanut-free.

100th Day Activities

We shared our 100 goodies. (We washed our hands.) The students cooperated and created a rhyming book about 100 monsters. They had a great time illustrating it. You will see it at Parent Teacher Conferences on March 3rd or 4th. They created mosiac pictures with 100 colored squares. We enjoyed several books too, including 100 Hungry Ants.

Buttons, Buttons, How many buttons?

After button week, we counted pockets every day. Our total for the week was 614. We have had 800 buttons donated to our contest. Keep them coming in until May. Thank you so much.
Each day we counted the buttons that each of us wore and used that many unifix cubes to show tens and ones. The students got to see how place value worked. On Friday, we regrouped the extra ones into tens, the extra tens into hundreds, and discovered that we had 10 hundreds! The final count was 1,064 buttons worn all week. Wow, that was exciting. We are also counting the donated buttons each day until the end of the year. We have a contest with Mrs. Day's class to see who collects the most by May. We are watching place value in action. We also graphed the buttons in a bull's eye graph and a venn diagram. We described the attributes of buttons and played a game called Bodacious Button. Next week, we will count pockets all week. Wear clothes with lots of pockets each day.
