Place Value-100 boards

We have been working with 1-100 boards to learn about the patterns in place value. The students made their own 1-100 puzzle for the math box. Let them show you what they know about 10's and 1's.

Mapping

For our core curriculum, 1st graders are supposed to learn about maps, compass directions and 3 continents (North America, Antarctica, & Australia) and 2 oceans (Atlantic and Pacific). We had some engaging activities and songs to learn these concepts.
Ask your child what they remember about maps.

Water Lessons

Mrs. Morley taught about the 3 states of water: liquid, solid, & gas. She let the students do many experiments and art projects to cement their learning about water.

TOY DAY

The only day that kids get to bring toys to school for Show and Tell is Toy Day after Christmas. It was so exciting to show the toys and then to play with them for 30 minutes.

Happy Birthday Utah!

Jan. 4th was Utah's 114th birthday. We have learned things about Utah all week. We had a cake, and we're doing a 500 piece puzzle in centers. We drew our maps on a matrix and learned the Soggy Waffle song to help us with the Compass Rose. We made a large book about some of the favorite things we like to do in Utah.

Math Menus

We are almost finished with our addition and subtraction math menus. Last week we explored many ways to make 11 with cubes, jewels, beans, blocks, number lines, and other counters. We will work on 12 next week. These manipulative activities are so important in understanding how math works. These discoveries are stored in the brain for later use in higher math problems. Then they can visualize what is happening. We have been doing weekly tests, speed games, and flashcards to help memorize the math facts. We are starting little daily math tests next week. Practice these for the math box.

Math Matix Activities

The children learned about matrices that are composed of columns and rows. We practiced with cubes, money, pattern blocks, colored tiles & chips. We identified matrices around the room like the calendar, our reading chart, our word wall, our tote tray rack, our test paper, our behavior chart, etc.
